12 weeks pregnant: baby size, body changes and what to expect

At 12 weeks pregnant you are in the first trimester, with about 28 weeks to go until a 40-week due date. Weeks are counted from the first day of your last period, so this is roughly month 3 of pregnancy.

How big is your baby at 12 weeks?

Around week 12, your baby is often compared to a lime. Fruit and vegetable comparisons are a friendly way to picture the size, not an exact measurement.

The first trimester runs to the end of week 13. It is when the baby's main organs and body systems start to form, and many people feel tired, queasy or both.

Your body at 12 weeks

The risk of miscarriage falls noticeably. Your uterus is rising out of the pelvis, so you may pee a little less often.

What is going on

Your womb is rising out of the pelvis and pressing on the bladder less. Many pregnancies have their first scan around now, and the lower risk of miscarriage brings relief to many.

What can help

Plan the first-trimester check-up, if you have not had it yet, and ask what tests are offered.
