16 weeks pregnant: baby size, body changes and what to expect

At 16 weeks pregnant you are in the second trimester, with about 24 weeks to go until a 40-week due date. Weeks are counted from the first day of your last period, so this is roughly month 4 of pregnancy.

How big is your baby at 16 weeks?

Around week 16, your baby is often compared to a avocado. Fruit and vegetable comparisons are a friendly way to picture the size, not an exact measurement.

The second trimester covers weeks 14 to 27. Many people find it the more comfortable stretch, and baby movements are often first noticed around this time.

Your body at 16 weeks

Some mothers may feel first flutters, like bubbles. Back ache can begin as your belly grows.

What is going on

The womb is growing upward, and for some, light fluttering movements start, called quickening. Often these are felt later in a first pregnancy.

What can help

Wear supportive, comfortable shoes and sleep on your side if lying flat feels uncomfortable.
