17 weeks pregnant: baby size, body changes and what to expect

At 17 weeks pregnant you are in the second trimester, with about 23 weeks to go until a 40-week due date. Weeks are counted from the first day of your last period, so this is roughly month 4 of pregnancy.

How big is your baby at 17 weeks?

Around week 17, your baby is often compared to a pear. Fruit and vegetable comparisons are a friendly way to picture the size, not an exact measurement.

The second trimester covers weeks 14 to 27. Many people find it the more comfortable stretch, and baby movements are often first noticed around this time.

Your body at 17 weeks

Your balance shifts as the bump grows. Leg cramps, achy ligaments and brighter skin are common.

What is going on

The ligaments supporting your womb stretch, which can cause sharp, short twinges on one or both sides when you move suddenly. Your centre of gravity is starting to shift.

What can help

Change position slowly, and a warm (not hot) compress may ease twinges.
